Alappuzha, 20 Feb (H.S.):The Alappuzha Medical College has constituted a four-member inquiry committee after a shocking incident in which a pair of surgical scissors was found inside a woman’s abdomen nearly five years after her surgery.

The committee, headed by RMO Dr. Lakshmi, includes Surgery Department Head Dr. Sajikumar, Professor Anasuya from the Gynaecology Department, and Dr. Rakhin from the Forensic Department. The panel has been directed to submit its report within an hour, Medical College Principal Dr. Padmakumar said. A preliminary inquiry was conducted earlier in the day by a team comprising the Principal, Superintendent, and RMO. They examined the case sheet and informed the government of the available details. A detailed investigation is now underway.

The incident involves Usha, who underwent surgery on May 12, 2021, at the Government Medical College Hospital, Vandanam, for the removal of a uterine fibroid. She was discharged after two days. Hospital records show that she did not return for follow-up treatment thereafter. The surgical procedure was performed under the unit of Dr. Lalithambika, with Assistant Professor Dr. Shahida leading the surgery. Dr. Shahida has since been transferred from Alappuzha but remains in government service.

According to hospital authorities, the surgical instrument was discovered only recently when Usha underwent an X-ray examination for urinary problems. She met the Head of the Gynaecology Department on Wednesday, following which further tests were conducted. Although she was advised immediate admission, she reportedly returned home citing personal issues.

College Superintendent Dr. Harikumar described the incident as “extremely unfortunate” and assured that any lapse would be treated with utmost seriousness. Based on the inquiry findings and government directives, appropriate action will be taken, he added.

Meanwhile, tension flared on the campus as Youth Congress activists stormed a press conference held by doctors. Protesters, led by State Working President Binu Chulliyil and District President Praveen Kumar, climbed onto tables and covered the doctors’ faces in protest. Police later removed the demonstrators by force. Protests continue outside the Medical College, intensifying public concern over the alleged medical negligence.
