Shillong, 20 February (HS): Proceedings of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, including the scheduled presentation of the state Budget on Friday, are set to be postponed as a mark of respect to Shillong Member of Parliament Ricky A J Syngkon, who passed away suddenly on Thursday evening.
The announcement was made by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma after consultations with Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, who is also in charge of Parliamentary Affairs. A final decision is expected to be taken at a meeting of the Business Advisory Committee under the chairmanship of the Assembly Speaker on Friday.
Syngkon reportedly collapsed while playing futsal on the outskirts of Shillong. He was rushed to a private hospital, where doctors declared him dead at approximately 8:45 pm.
Describing the development as deeply shocking, the Chief Minister said that suspending the House proceedings, including the Budget presentation, would serve as a tribute to the departed leader. Sangma also recalled his recent meeting with Syngkon in Delhi nearly two weeks ago to deliberate on development initiatives concerning Meghalaya, noting that it was their last interaction.
Calling the untimely demise a significant loss to the state, Sangma lauded Syngkon’s commitment to the people of Khasi and Jaintia Hills. He said the late MP worked with humility, foresight and a genuine resolve to advance the welfare of society. The Chief Minister conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for strength for his supporters and party colleagues.------------
