Jorhat, 20 February (HS): A major fire broke out late at night at the North Eastern Regional Institute of Science and Technology (NERIST) campus in Jorhat, triggering panic among students and staff.

According to initial reports, the blaze erupted in one of the buildings of the institute under circumstances yet to be ascertained. Fire and emergency services personnel rushed to the spot after receiving information and launched an intensive operation to bring the flames under control.

Sources said the fire caused significant damage to property, though no casualties have been reported so far. The exact extent of the loss is being assessed.
