
Chennai, 19 February (H.S.) : Ten women passengers were successfully rescued after being trapped in a malfunctioning lift at the Mundakakanni Amman Kovil MRTS station in Mylapore on Wednesday night.
The incident, which occurred during peak hours, triggered significant panic among commuters at the busy railway station. According to reports, the lift suddenly developed a technical snag and came to a halt midway while carrying a group of women who frequently use the facility to avoid the stairs.
The stranded passengers remained trapped for nearly 20 minutes, leading to anxious moments as fellow commuters alerted the authorities. Personnel from the fire and rescue services rushed to the spot and were forced to remove the lift door to reach those inside.
Firefighters managed to rescue the women one by one, ensuring that all trapped passengers were brought out safely without any injuries. The entire operation caused a major commotion at the station for over an hour as crowds gathered to witness the rescue efforts.
Railway authorities and local officials stated that the lift facility at the station is heavily utilized by elderly and women passengers. Following the rescue, technical teams were called in to inspect the cause of the malfunction.
Statements from the rescue personnel confirmed that the swift response helped prevent any medical emergencies during the ordeal.
Regular commuters have since raised concerns regarding the maintenance of essential amenities at MRTS stations to prevent such frightening recurrences in the future.
