Kolkata, 19 February (H.S.): In view of the serious risk of fire and the potential for disruption to train operations, the Sealdah Division of Eastern Railway has strongly appealed to citizens and passengers not to throw or burn garbage near railway tracks. A press release issued by the Division on Thursday stated that even a minor negligence during dry weather can lead to a major disaster for public safety and train operations.

The Sealdah Division has specifically urged people not to throw dry leaves, plastic waste, and flammable items—such as lit cigarette butts—on or near railway tracks, as these can catch fire quickly and increase the risk of fire spread.

Furthermore, burning garbage heaps near railway lines is strictly discouraged. According to the Division, the intense heat and smoke generated by ground fires pose a serious threat to overhead electric (OHE) wires and sensitive signaling equipment. Such incidents can cause power outages, cable damage, and major disruptions to train services, potentially resulting in property loss and risk to human life.

Sealdah Division clarified that passenger safety and smooth train movement are its top priorities. The Division appealed to citizens to adopt responsible behavior, refrain from throwing or burning garbage near the tracks, and stated that the safety of the railway network is a shared responsibility.

Finally, Sealdah Division urged all citizens to strictly adhere to safety guidelines, stating that only vigilance and responsible behavior can prevent accidents and protect this vital transportation lifeline of the city.
