Odisha Assembly Adjourned

Bhubaneswar, 19 February (H.S.): The Odisha Legislative Assembly witnessed intense disruptions today as opposition MLAs from the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and Congress protested over irregularities in paddy procurement and other issues affecting farmers. Due to the commotion, the first half of the Question Hour could not be conducted, and the House was eventually adjourned until 4 PM.

The Assembly proceedings were scheduled to begin at 10:30 AM. Speaker Surama Padhi attempted to start the Question Hour, and Minister Mukesh Mahaling was called upon to respond to a question raised by MLA Sanjoli Murmu. However, strong protests from opposition members from the outset prevented any substantive discussion.

Opposition MLAs raised concerns over problems at rice procurement centers, irregularities in paddy purchase, and other grievances faced by farmers. They also carried banners displaying various slogans critical of the government’s policies. Despite repeated appeals by Speaker Padi for members to return to their seats and cooperate in the House proceedings, the opposition continued their protest.

As a result, the Speaker first adjourned the House at 11:30 AM. When the session resumed, the situation remained unchanged, with MLAs continuing their demonstration and slogans. Finally, the Speaker declared the House adjourned until 4 PM.
