Thiruvananthapuram, 19 Feb (H.S.):The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall across parts of Kerala over the next two days, prompting the issuance of a yellow alert in several districts. The warning will be in effect on Saturday and Sunday, with isolated heavy showers expected in southern and central regions of the State.
According to the IMD, a yellow alert has been declared for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, and Idukki districts on Saturday. On Sunday, the alert will remain in force for Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, and Idukki. The department has cautioned that isolated areas may receive heavy rainfall ranging between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within a 24-hour period.
Meteorologists attribute the likely intensification of rainfall to multiple weather systems developing over the region. A low-pressure area has formed over the equatorial Indian Ocean and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal. This system is expected to move west-northwestwards towards Sri Lanka and weaken within the next 24 hours.
In addition, a cyclonic circulation persists over the equatorial Indian Ocean and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal. The IMD has indicated that this system is likely to intensify into a low-pressure area within the next 24 hours. Extending from this low-pressure zone, a trough runs across southern Tamil Nadu and southern Kerala up to Lakshadweep, creating favourable conditions for enhanced rainfall activity across Kerala.
The combined impact of these systems is expected to trigger intermittent heavy showers, particularly in the southern districts. Authorities have advised residents in vulnerable areas, including hilly and low-lying regions, to remain cautious. With the possibility of sudden downpours, minor flooding in urban pockets and waterlogging in poorly drained areas cannot be ruled out.
Fisherfolk have also been urged to stay updated on weather advisories, especially in view of the evolving low-pressure systems over the Indian Ocean region.
The State Disaster Management Authority is closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with district administrations to ensure preparedness. Further updates are expected as the weather systems evolve over the coming days.
