VIJAYAWADA, 02 January (H.S.): Two IndiGo flights en route from Delhi and Mumbai to Hyderabad endured diversion to Gannavaram Airport near Vijayawada on Friday owing to dense fog enveloping the destination, ensuring passenger safety amid plummeting visibility.
Vijayawada Airport Director Lakshmikanth Reddy confirmed the precautionary rerouting, noting the aircraft could not loiter indefinitely mid-air while awaiting clearance at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport.
Each plane accommodated nearly 200 passengers—aggregating around 400 individuals—who disembarked safely following smooth touchdowns at Gannavaram.
Operational Response
Reddy assured that flights would resume to Hyderabad post-weather amelioration and requisite air traffic approvals, with airport personnel furnishing refreshments, clean facilities, and baggage handling to mitigate inconvenience.
This episode underscores recurring winter fog perils plaguing southern aviation hubs, prompting vigilant diversions to proximate alternates like Gannavaram.
