CBI summons TVK leader Vijay again for questioning in Karur stampede case

Chennai, 18 January (H.S.) : The Central Bureau of Investigation, CBI, has issued a fresh summons to Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, TVK, leader Vijay, directing him to appear at its New Delhi office on January 19. This summons is part of the ongoing investigation into the tragic stampede that occurred in Karur on September 27, 2025.

The incident took place during a political campaign event where a massive crowd had gathered, resulting in the unfortunate death of 41 individuals. The federal agency has been intensifying its probe to determine responsibility and accountability for the lapses that led to the tragedy.

Vijay previously appeared before the CBI on January 12, where he was questioned extensively about the organizational details of the event. During that session, investigators sought clarity on his knowledge of the security arrangements, the reasons for his delayed arrival, and whether any measures were taken to manage the swelling crowd.

The agency also inquired if the local administration had issued any prior warnings regarding the lack of adequate facilities such as drinking water and safe exit routes. While the TVK leader reportedly provided detailed explanations during the first round of questioning, the agency now requires further information.

The investigation has already involved the questioning of several senior TVK functionaries, including general secretary Bussi Anand and Adhav Arjuna. These leaders have provided statements regarding the logistical arrangements made for the Karur rally.

Following the conclusion of the Pongal festival, the CBI decided to proceed with the second phase of questioning for the party chief. Vijay is expected to travel to Delhi this evening to comply with the latest summons as the agency continues to piece together the circumstances surrounding the deadly incident.
