East Burdwan, 18 January (H.S.): Discontent has openly surfaced within the Trinamool Congress against the decision to remove the newly appointed zonal president within just 72 hours. Alleging discrimination within the party, Trinamool workers and supporters in the Sehara area blocked Burdwan-Arambagh road on Sunday, staging a strong protest. The blockade took place in the Mirepota area.
Notably, on January 15, a list of presidents for various zones of East Burdwan district was released during a press conference. Akhil Bagh was announced as the president of Sehara zone in this list. However, within a few days, without any clear reason, Akhil Bagh's name was removed from the list, and Samir Sai was once again declared the zonal president. This decision sparked widespread anger among party workers.
The protesting workers alleged that Samir Sai had not been playing an active role in the organization for a long time. During his tenure, the CPI(M) held continuous rallies and marches, but the Trinamool Congress did not organize any effective counter-programmes. Despite this, the removal of Akhil Bagh, a long-standing and active party worker, without any reason is unjust.
The workers also alleged that Akhil Bagh belongs to the Scheduled Caste community, and that he was systematically removed from his position for this reason. The protesters questioned whether decisions in the party will now be made based on caste instead of merit.
The road blockade led to a massive traffic jam on the Burdwan-Arambagh road. Later, the situation was brought under control to some extent with the intervention of the administration.
