Chennai, 18 January (H.S.) : In view of the upcoming 75th Republic Day celebrations on January 26, a stringent five-tier security blanket has been activated at the Chennai International Airport.
The heightened security measures, which came into effect from last midnight, will remain in force until midnight on January 30, according to airport authorities. The security protocol is expected to be further escalated to a maximum seven-tier system during the peak period of January 24, 25, and 26 to ensure the safety of passengers and infrastructure.
As part of the intensified arrangements, all vehicles approaching the airport are being stopped at the main entrance for thorough inspection by security personnel and sniffer dogs. Bomb disposal squads are conducting regular scans with metal detectors, and armed police personnel are maintaining a constant vigil across the airport premises.
Special attention is being given to the multi-level car parking area, where experts are meticulously inspecting vehicles parked for extended durations. Additionally, Central Industrial Security Force, CISF, commando units are carrying out intensive checks in sensitive zones, including the aircraft apron area and fuel stations.
Passenger screening has also been significantly enhanced with secondary security checks conducted at the boarding gates. Authorities have placed strict restrictions on carrying liquids, pickles, jams, and oil bottles in cabin baggage.
Due to these detailed procedures, passengers have been advised to arrive well in advance—at least one and a half hours before domestic flights and three and a half hours before international departures. Despite the tight security, airport officials confirmed that all flight operations are proceeding according to the regular schedule.
