Thiruvananthapuram, 18 Jan (H.S.): A scientific examination has confirmed allegations of large-scale gold pilferage at the Sabarimala temple, with findings indicating a significant shortfall of gold on key ceremonial structures.
The conclusions are based on a detailed forensic audit conducted by the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), and the report is scheduled to be submitted before the Kerala High Court on Friday.
According to the findings, the gold content on the kattalapalli (sacred wooden panels) carried by Unnikrishnan Potti, as well as on the Dwarapalaka (gatekeeper) sculptures, is significantly lower than what was originally recorded.
The scientific examination detected a reduction in the quantity of gold applied and noticeable discrepancies in the weight of the panels.
The VSSC report was prepared after a comparative analysis of two sets of gold-plated panels. These included panels gilded in 1998 by the UB Group led by Vijay Mallya, and panels that were later taken for regilding by Unnikrishnan Potti and subsequently returned.
The comparison revealed that the quantity of gold on the 1998-plated panels had reduced and that there were clear differences in the gold composition between the two sets of panels.
Investigators also found variations in the overall weight of the panels, further strengthening suspicions of unauthorised removal of gold. Officials stated that such differences cannot be attributed to natural deterioration alone, especially when panels exposed to similar conditions show measurable inconsistencies.
The report, described as crucial in determining the future course of the investigation, was submitted last Friday to the Vigilance Court in Kollam in a sealed cover. On Thursday, the court handed over the report to the Special Investigation Team (SIT). The SIT is currently examining the findings in detail and will submit its evaluation before the High Court.
Sources indicate that SIT chief and Additional Director General of Police H. Venkatesh is likely to appear in person before the High Court to explain the scientific findings and respond to judicial queries. Legal observers note that the confirmation of gold discrepancies could significantly impact the case, possibly leading to expanded accountability and stricter monitoring of temple assets.
As the High Court prepares to review the report, the VSSC findings are expected to play a decisive role in establishing responsibility in one of Kerala’s most sensitive temple-related controversies.
