Nagpur, 17 Jan
(HS): Bharatiya Janata Party captured Nagpur Municipal Corporation for the fourth
time in a row. The elections turned out to be a one sided affair with BJP
winning 102 out of a total 151 seats. The number of seats, however, is six less
compared to the last elections.
On the other
hand Congress improved its tally by five seats and won 34 seats.
Discontent among
the BJP workers who were denied is the probably the cause of reduction of
seats. Many of them filed nominations as independent candidates diving the BJP’s
traditional vote share.
Asaddudin Owaisi’s
party All India Majlis-e-Ittehadur Muslimeen (AIMIM) and Indian Union Muslim
League (IUML) made a spectacular debut in Nagpur by bagging six and four seats
respectively in the first attempt. Traditionally Muslim votes are cast in favour
of Congress, which had fielded its candidates from the Muslim dominated wards.
The results indicate polarisation of Muslim votes.
Shiv Sena
(Shinde) could get only one seat, while Shiv Sena of UBT retained its two seats
in Nagpur. NCP also could get only one seat.
Surprisingly
Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), which was expected to increase its tally could win
only one seat, nine less that the last elections.
Chief Minister
Devendra Fadnavis, who held the position of Nagpur’s Mayor, said in Nagpur on
Friday night that the BJP won the elections on ‘Vikas Ka Agenda’ (Agenda of
Development).
Fadnavis
returned to Nagpur after attending the party’s celebrations in Mumbai. He along
with other leaders and victorious candidates met Union Minister Nitin Gadkari
on Friday night.
Fadnavis and
Gadkari dedicated the victory to systematic strategic planning by Fadnavis, and
party workers for their dedicated and hard works. They thanked the voters for
their support to BJP and its agenda of development.
