Nagpur, 17 Jan
(HS): Bharatiya Janata Party-led Mahayuti (mega alliance) recorded a historical
sweep, and won 25 out of the 29 municipal corporations in which elections were
held on January 15. BJP won 1438 seats out of 2869 cornering all other parties
in the Opposition and also its allies, under the leadership of Chief Minister
Devendra Fadnavis.
Shiv Sena-led by
Eknaath Shinde came next with 405 seats and Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress
Party could muster 165. Both the partners in the Mahayuti government in
Maharashtra. The major opposition party Indian National Congress placed third
in the tally won 318 seats.
The much hyped
Uddhav Balasaheb Thackarey Sena could win 157, while his brother Raj Thackeray
leading the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena bagged only 14.
The Sharad Pawar
faction of the Nationalist Congress Party ended up with only35 seats across the
state..
Congress won
Latur by winning 43 seats out of a total of 70, and came as largest party in
Bhiwandi (42/90) and Chandrapur (30/66).
UBT and MNS
emerged as largest party in Parbhani with 25 seats out of 65. Congress captured 12 seats. The Parbhani will
be ruled by the Maha-Vikas Aghadi. BJP could win 12 and 11 by NCP (Ajit Pawar).
AIMIM: Emergence of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) in
Maharashtra was a major factor. The party led by MP Asaduddin Owaisi captured
about 125 seats in Maharashtra, mainly in Chhatrati Sambhajinagar, Malegaon,
Amravati,Nanded and Dhule.
BVA: Another surprise was presented by the Bahujan Vikas Aghadi, which emerged
as the largest party in Vasai-Virar ahead of BJP.
CM Fadnavis: After a stellar performance across Maharashtra, Chief
Minister Devendra Fadnavis said, people voted for development and honesty. BJP offered
the agenda of development to which people responded.
