
New Delhi, 17 January (H.S.): Customs officials at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) thwarted a gold smuggling attempt on Saturday, seizing 2.16 kilograms of gold valued at approximately 2.90 crore rupees in the international market. Three male citizens from Myanmar have been arrested in connection with the case.
According to customs authorities, during preventive shift 'D' on January 14, three passengers arriving from Yangon (Myanmar) on flight number 8M-620 were intercepted at Terminal-3's international arrival hall while passing through the green channel on suspicion.
A thorough personal search and detailed examination of their baggage yielded 13 gold bars with a total weight of 2,158 grams. The tariff value of the seized gold has been assessed at 2,89,81,530 rupees.
Customs has confiscated the gold under Section 110 of the Customs Act, 1962. The three accused have been arrested under Section 104.Officials revealed that investigations into other aspects of the smuggling network continue.
Customs affirmed that vigilant monitoring and stringent measures at airports will persist unabated to curb smuggling activities.
