Chennai, 14 January (H.S.) : The COIMBATORE City Police Commissioner distributed free helmets to two-wheeler riders on Wednesday morning as part of an initiative to raise awareness about road safety.

The drive was organized in observance of NATIONAL ROAD SAFETY WEEK 2026, which is being held from January 11 to January 17 across the city. During the event, Commissioner D KANNAN personally handed over helmets to several motorists who were found riding without headgear.

He engaged with the violators to explain the life-saving importance of wearing helmets and warned that strict legal action would be initiated against those who continue to flout the safety rules.

The city police have been conducting various awareness programmes throughout the week to educate the public on traffic regulations. Authorities stated that a significant number of road fatalities in the region involve head injuries that could have been prevented with proper helmet usage.

As part of the current campaign, traffic police personnel are not only enforcing fines but also focusing on behavioral change among riders and pillion passengers. Commissioner D KANNAN emphasized that the safety of the citizens is the top priority and urged all two-wheeler users to make helmet-wearing a habit rather than just a means to avoid penalties.

Similar awareness sessions and distribution drives are expected to continue at various major junctions in COIMBATORE until the conclusion of the safety week.
