Guwahati, 11 January (HS): The Assam BJP on Sunday accused Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi of adopting “opportunistic political alignments” ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. Addressing a press conference in Guwahati, BJP spokesperson Dr. Devajit Mahanta alleged that Gogoi projects himself differently across regions—presenting a Jatiyatawadi image in Upper Assam while aligning more closely with minority groups in Lower Assam.
Mahanta claimed that Gogoi has intensified his activities in minority-dominated areas like Chenga, Srijangram and Mandia, calling it part of a calculated political outreach. He also reiterated BJP’s criticism of Gogoi’s stance on eviction drives, saying his opposition to such actions goes against indigenous interests.
Senior BJP leaders Brajen Mahanta, Pranjal Kalita and Moon Talukdar were also present.
At the same event, Mahanta targeted Congress-ruled Karnataka and Himachal Pradesh over rising debt, and challenged Assam Congress to declare in its manifesto that it would avoid loan borrowings if voted to power.---------------
