Kolkata, 4 August (H.S.) :Amid the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) is intensifying its strategy to take on the central government over key issues concerning West Bengal. On Monday evening, Chief Minister and party supremo Mamata Banerjee will chair a crucial virtual meeting with the party’s Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha members to outline the TMC’s stance inside Parliament.
According to a statement released by the party late Sunday, the meeting is scheduled to begin at 4:30 PM and is expected to last for about an hour. During the meeting, Banerjee will instruct MPs on how to effectively raise two issues on the floor of the House — the alleged persecution of Bengali-speaking migrant workers in BJP-ruled states and the concerns over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
The TMC has alleged that the SIR exercise disproportionately targets voters in West Bengal, and the party aims to highlight this as part of its broader protest narrative against the BJP government at the Centre.
In a parallel development, TMC's national general secretary and Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee will represent the party at a meeting of the opposition bloc INDIA on August 7 in New Delhi. The meeting has been convened to finalise the strategy for the planned joint protest outside the Election Commission office on August 8.
Party sources indicate that Abhishek Banerjee will also use the INDIA meeting to build consensus among opposition parties on the issue of alleged harassment of Bengali migrant labourers in BJP-ruled states.
The upcoming meeting may also touch upon the opposition’s approach to the Vice Presidential election, though no official confirmation has been made on this agenda point.
While TMC is keen to raise the SIR issue in Parliament, it remains unclear how far it can pursue the matter within the House. The central government has reportedly clarified that there is no scope for discussion on the topic during the current session.
The Monsoon Session of Parliament began on July 21 and is scheduled to continue until August 21.
