Jalpaiguri, 4 August (H.S.): Tension flared at Teesta Ghat near Jalpesh Temple in Mainaguri as devotees alleged that they were being charged extra money while collecting water from the Teesta River, a key part of the traditional rituals during the holy month of Shravan.
Many pilgrims claimed they were forced to pay ₹30 at the ghat to access the river.
The receipts provided to the pilgrims do not mention any amount. The receipts carry the names of the Mainaguri Panchayat Samiti, Burnish Gram Panchayat, and a local club.
Speaking on the issue, Maynaguri Block Development Officer (BDO) Prosenjit Kundu clarified, “According to the terms of the tender granted for managing lighting, parking, sanitation, food stalls, and civil security at Teesta Ghat, the authorized personnel are allowed to collect only ₹10 from pilgrims. An additional ₹10 may be charged for puja-related items like incense sticks, candles, and priest services. But under no circumstances should pilgrims be charged ₹30.”
Kundu assured that an investigation has been initiated, and if unauthorized collection is confirmed, those awarded the tender will face penalties.
Meanwhile, growing anger among devotees over the alleged exploitation threatens to overshadow the sanctity of the pilgrimage. Many are demanding strict action against those involved in the forced collection and better regulation of religious services at the ghat.
