Guwahati, 04 Aug (HS): Assam is set to make history with the launch of India’s first 5G Captive Non-Public Network in the refinery sector, thanks to a new collaboration between Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL).

The agreement, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), marks a major breakthrough in integrating advanced digital technology into industrial operations.

Calling it a moment of pride for the state, Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma shared the news on social media, emphasizing its importance for both Digital Assam and Atmanirbhar Bharat. “It’s a big leap,” he wrote, noting how technologies like IoT, AR/VR, and Big Data will now power Assam’s industrial backbone.

With this 5G network, NRL will gain access to ultra-fast data transmission, real-time systems control, and high-level automation—technological capabilities expected to transform refinery operations.

More than just a regional achievement, the initiative positions Assam as a digital pioneer in India’s energy sector. It supports the broader national agenda of creating a self-reliant, tech-enabled industrial ecosystem.

Officials involved in the project are hopeful that the model will inspire similar digital upgrades across other sectors in the country.

The partnership between BSNL and NRL is not just a technological advance—it’s a strategic move toward building India’s high-tech future.
