Alipurduar, 3 August (H.S.): Continuous rain in North Bengal has disrupted life. People are facing landslides, river erosion and waterlogging simultaneously in hilly and plain areas. The biggest problem has arisen on National Highway No. 10. Due to the landslide near Shwetijhara on Sunday morning, a large part of the road got submerged in the Teesta river. As a result, traffic between Bengal and Sikkim has been disrupted.
According to local sources, cracks were seen on the road in Shwetijhara area since Saturday. On Sunday morning the cracks took a terrible kform. As a result of the landslide, the Teesta river swallowed a large part of the road. As a result, tourists and local residents are facing trouble.
Due to continuous rain, not only the national highway, but also many districts of North Bengal are submerged. The water of the Teesta river has entered some areas of Jalpaiguri and Haldibari. The irrigation department has issued a yellow signal for the Teesta and Torsa rivers. Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department has warned that heavy rains will continue in North Bengal for the next two days.
As per information, Alipurduar received record rainfall overnight. By 8 am on Sunday, 152 mm of rain fell. As a result, the water level of the Dima, Kaljani and Raidak rivers has risen. Water has started flowing at a fast speed in the rivers.
The Alipur Meteorological Department said that a cyclone is formed over North Bengal. This continuous rain is due to its effect. Heavy to very heavy rains are expected to continue till Tuesday. After that, the intensity of rain will decrease slightly, but will not stop completely. The water level of the river may rise further, which may pose a risk of floods in low-lying areas.
The administration has increased monitoring of landslides, river erosion and waterlogging in hilly areas. Disaster response teams have been kept ready. Local people have been advised to stay safe.
