Amethi, 03 Aug (HS): A leopard that had caused terror
in multiple villages in Amethi district was discovered dead, with authorities
assuming it was slain by locals. The large cat's carcass was discovered on
Saturday night in Nevada village. In Bhaipur village, a leopard harmed three
persons. A team of forest authorities, police, and district administration
initiated a 36-hour effort to apprehend it on Friday night. Despite intensive
efforts, the animal could not be trapped.
According to locals, the leopard
attacked a buffalo calf late Saturday night and was killed when the mother
buffalo reacted. Vivek Singh, House
Officer (SHO) of Musafirkhana Station and Musafirkhana Sub-Divisional
Magistrate (SDM) Abhinav Kanojia said the carcass has been sent for postmortem.
The specific cause of death will be determined after the autopsy report
is obtained, he said. The leopard's presence in the area had sparked widespread
panic and interrupted daily life in the impacted communities.
Amethi District
Magistrate Rakesh Chauhan stated that the leopard appears to have attacked
several buffaloes inside a shed and was perhaps killed in response. After
receiving reports of an animal assault on homeowners around 10 a.m. on
Saturday, we quickly dispatched a reaction team. The SDM and other authorities
arrived at the scene and confirmed it was a leopard, he claimed. Rescue
operations were launched, and professional teams were dispatched from Lucknow
and Bahraich, however the leopard evaded capture.
