New Delhi, August 17(HS): In a major milestone for consumer justice in India, the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC) along with ten States recorded a disposal rate exceeding 100 percent in July 2025, meaning more consumer cases were resolved than filed during the period.
According to data released by the Department of Consumer Affairs, NCDRC achieved an impressive 122 percent disposal rate, while Tamil Nadu topped the charts at 277 percent, followed by Rajasthan (214%), Telangana (158%), Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand (150% each), Meghalaya (140%), Kerala (122%), Puducherry (111%), Chhattisgarh (108%) and Uttar Pradesh (101%).
This surge in efficiency marks a significant leap over last year’s performance for the same period, reflecting improved speed and effectiveness in handling consumer grievances across the country.
Adding to this success, the government’s e-Jagriti digital platform, launched on January 1, 2025, has emerged as a key enabler of transformation. As of August 6, over two lakh users including NRIs have registered on the portal, while 85,531 new cases were filed this year alone.
e-Jagriti integrates multiple legacy systems—including OCMS, e-Daakhil, NCDRC CMS, and CONFONET—into a single interface, allowing consumers to file complaints online, pay fees digitally, upload documents, and monitor case progress in real time. The platform also supports virtual hearings, voice-to-text filing for visually impaired and elderly users, multilingual services, and integrated payment gateways, making consumer justice more inclusive and transparent than ever before.
Success Stories of Speedy Justice
Several recent rulings underscore the effectiveness of the revamped consumer dispute system:
Tamil Nadu (Dharmapuri): A buyer of a defective television received a refund of ₹14,249, with an additional ₹15,000 awarded towards compensation and litigation costs—case resolved in just 80 days.
Tamil Nadu (Thanjavur): A consumer was refunded ₹99,500 plus 9% interest, along with ₹5 lakh compensation and litigation expenses from a coaching institute dispute.
Punjab (Barnala): A consumer received full refund for defective tiles, with the commission ruling in his favour after expert testimony confirmed manufacturing defects.
Haryana (Rewari): Refund of ₹61,097 plus ₹25,000 compensation was awarded for a defective dishwasher.
Gujarat (Ahmedabad): An insurance company was ordered to fully reimburse a denied Mediclaim claim, with 7% interest and compensation for harassment.
A Step Towards Inclusive Consumer Justice
By fully digitizing workflows and enabling virtual access, e-Jagriti is reducing reliance on paper and physical infrastructures while accelerating justice delivery. Secure, encrypted role-based access and advocate–Bar Council integration further enhance efficiency and trust in the system.
The Ministry of Consumer Affairs has urged citizens to make greater use of the platform, reinforcing that timely and transparent grievance redressal is central to strengthening consumer rights in India.
