New Delhi, August 17 (HS) : India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri landed in Kathmandu on Sunday for a two-day official visit, arriving aboard a special Indian Air Force aircraft (IFC 31) at Tribhuvan International Airport. He was warmly received by senior officials from Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and representatives of the Indian Embassy.
The centerpiece of Secretary Misri’s trip will be his meeting with Nepalese Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli, during which he is expected to formally hand over New Delhi’s invitation for Prime Minister Oli’s scheduled visit to India in September.
Following his meeting with the prime minister, Misri will call on Nepal’s President, Ramchandra Paudel, at his official residence, Shital Niwas. A series of high-profile political engagements are also on the agenda, including interactions with leaders across the political spectrum. Misri is slated to meet former Prime Minister and Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba at his residence, as well as Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, Chair of the opposition Maoist party, at his home.
Beyond political consultations, the Indian foreign secretary will hold discussions with Nepal’s Foreign Minister Dr. Arzu Rana and engage in a round of bilateral talks with his counterpart, Foreign Secretary Amrit Rai. According to Rai, the dialogue will focus on finalizing the agenda for Prime Minister Oli’s upcoming visit to India, which is expected to highlight pressing issues in bilateral relations.
Misri’s visit is seen as an important step in setting the stage for high-level political dialogue and strengthening India-Nepal ties ahead of September’s anticipated summit.
