New Delhi, August 16(HS): India on Saturday hailed the landmark Alaska Summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, describing the talks as a commendable step toward global peace and resolution of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
In an official statement, the Ministry of External Affairs praised the “leadership and statesmanship” displayed by both leaders in choosing dialogue over confrontation.
“India welcomes the Summit meeting in Alaska between US President Donald Trump and President Vladimir Putin of Russia. Their leadership in the pursuit of peace is highly commendable.
India appreciates the progress made in the Summit. The way forward can only be through dialogue and diplomacy. The world wants to see an early end to the conflict in Ukraine,” the statement reads.
A Summit of Symbolism and Strategy
The two leaders met at a US military base in Alaska, a historic site once central to Washington’s strategy for countering Moscow during the Cold War. The choice of venue was widely seen as symbolic—transforming a place of rivalry into a forum for reconciliation.
Discussions reportedly focused on the war in Ukraine, European security architecture, and steps toward re-establishing stability in the broader international system.
India’s Position on Ukraine
New Delhi has consistently advocated for a balanced, non-confrontational approach to the Ukraine war. By backing the Alaska Summit, India reaffirmed its long-standing belief that lasting peace cannot be dictated on the battlefield but must be shaped across negotiating tables.
Signals of What Comes Next
The summit has ignited cautious optimism. President Trump, hinting at progress, suggested a possible second round of talks involving Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, raising hopes that eventual trilateral or multilateral negotiations could lay the foundation for peace.
Why India’s Endorsement Matters
India’s quick and positive response showcases its role as a global bridge-builder, maintaining vital relations with both Washington and Moscow while championing diplomacy as the key to resolving conflicts. Analysts note this positions India as an influential voice in shaping narratives around peace and security.
The Bigger Picture
Whether the Trump-Putin meeting is remembered as a turning point or a fleeting attempt at reconciliation will depend on follow-up actions. But for now, the Alaska Summit has shifted the global mood, offering at least a glimmer of hope that the guns in Ukraine may fall silent sooner rather than later.
