New Delhi, August 15 (HS):On India’s Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a robust message from the Red Fort, signaling that India will not compromise the interests of its farmers amidst persistent American demands and tariff threats.

In a speech regarded by many as a categorical response to U.S. President Donald Trump—without mentioning him directly—PM Modi declared that farmers, livestock keepers, and fishermen are central to India’s priorities, and insisted that his government would not allow any detrimental policies to affect them. “I stand as an unwavering shield for our farmers. India will never negotiate away their welfare,”PM Modi affirmed.

The Prime Minister’s assertion comes at a pivotal juncture in India-U.S. trade negotiations, with Washington pressing New Delhi to open its markets to American agricultural and dairy products. Despite this pressure, Indian authorities have remained firm, citing the need to protect domestic agriculture and rural livelihoods from foreign competition. This stance has contributed to the ongoing impasse between the two nations over a comprehensive trade deal.

In retaliation for India’s stand, the United States has imposed a 25% tariff on Indian exports, and has further announced similar tariffs for purchases of Russian oil by India—a move widely interpreted as an attempt to pressurize New Delhi into making concessions.

PM Modi’s speech also emphasized the vision of “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” (Self-Reliant India). He highlighted the dangers of dependency on external sources for essential needs, warning that such reliance could pose significant risks during global disruptions. The government, Modi said, has pinpointed nearly 100 districts where enhanced farmer support is being rolled out, including the implementation of the Prime Minister Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana to strengthen rural prosperity.

Reflecting on post-independence challenges, Modi praised India’s farmers for transforming the nation from hunger to food self-sufficiency, and echoed his conviction to safeguard that achievement.

With trade disagreements ongoing, PM Modi’s Independence Day remarks underscored India’s refusal to yield to American tariff pressures, making clear that the welfare of its agricultural community remains non-negotiable.
