Chennai, 24 July (H.S.): Actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan departed for Delhi on Wednesday, July 24, 2025, to take oath as a Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament on Thursday. Before leaving, Haasan met his long-time friend and fellow actor Rajinikanth in Chennai, where he presented him with a bouquet and a copy of his official Rajya Sabha nomination order. The two icons shared a warm moment, with Rajinikanth congratulating Haasan on his new role.
Haasan expressed his gratitude to the people who came to bid him farewell at the airport, saying, I think the reporters have not only come to collect news but also to send me off. Thank you for that. He emphasized his commitment to fulfilling his duties as an Indian, stating, I am going to fulfill the honour and duty given to me as an Indian. I say this with pride.
As the Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) chief, Haasan was nominated to the Rajya Sabha with the support of the DMK, as part of their alliance understanding. He will be joining five other newly elected MPs from Tamil Nadu, including DMK’s P. Wilson, Rajathi (Salma), SR Sivalingam, and AIADMK’s IS Inpathurai and M Dhanapal.
Haasan's MNM party secured around 4% of the vote in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and chose to support the DMK-led alliance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, which swept all 39 parliamentary seats in Tamil Nadu. With Haasan's new role, MNM is expected to contest the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections as part of the DMK-led alliance.
