Guwahati, 23 July (HS): In a major step towards environmental sustainability and waste management, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) held a collaborative meeting with officials from the Assam State Pollution Control Board (PCBA) and representatives of M/s Kusum Udyog, Rangia, a PCBA-approved recycling agency. The meeting, chaired by M Kalimuthy CME/EnHM/NFR, focused on initiatives to make Guwahati Railway Station the first plastic-free railway station in India.

During the meeting, key strategies were discussed to ensure efficient segregation, shredding, washing, and recycling of plastic waste collected from trains and station premises. M/s Kusum Udyog will be submitting a comprehensive proposal for handling, cleaning, and transporting plastic waste from the station’s garbage storage area to an authorized recycling unit. The agenda also included reviewing current waste disposal practices, identifying high-impact areas and formulating a joint action plan to minimize single-use plastics and enhance sustainable practices. Furtherly, the Scouts and Guides of NFR organized a public awareness activities such as placard displays, Nukkad Natak (street plays) and drama performances. Immediate steps have also been initiated to inspect and ensure proper functioning of the Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) and Sewage Treatment Plant (STP).

The Pollution Control Board commended these efforts and emphasized the importance of stricter compliance and regular monitoring. It also assured technical support and policy guidance to facilitate the adoption of eco-friendly alternatives and waste treatment solutions.

Guwahati Railway Station, the largest and most strategic station under the NFR zone, serves as a vital gateway to the Northeast, handling more than 100 trains daily including Rajdhani Express and Vande Bharat Express. Known for its high footfall, modern infrastructure and commitment to eco-friendly operations, the station is working in close partnership with the Assam Pollution Control Board and local industries to become a 100% plastic waste-managed and recycled station.

This meeting marks a significant step toward building a cleaner and greener railway ecosystem. It also reinforces the government’s broader commitment to reducing plastic pollution through collaborative and coordinated efforts between agencies.
