Delhi, 23 July (H.S.): Prime Minister Narendra Modi commenced a two-nation tour to the UK and Maldives on Wednesday, focusing on strengthening bilateral relations. In the UK, from July 23 to 24, he is set to meet Prime Minister Keir Starmer, where discussions will center on the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP), emphasizing areas like trade, technology, defense, climate, and education. This visit, PM Modi's fourth to the UK, will also involve reviewing the India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA). Additionally, PM Modi is expected to meet King Charles III during his time in the UK.

Following the UK visit, PM Modi will travel to the Maldives from July 25 to 26, at the invitation of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. This trip marks PM Modi's third visit to the Maldives and is noteworthy as it is the first by a head of state since Muizzu took office in November 2023. The two leaders aim to assess the implementation of the India-Maldives Joint Vision for a comprehensive economic and maritime security partnership, established during the Maldivian President's visit to India in October 2024. oM Modi will also be the Guest of Honour at the Maldives' 60th Independence Day celebrations on July 26.

The agenda for the Maldives visit includes discussions on the potential negotiation of a Free Trade Agreement and an investment treaty, which are expected to enhance peace and security in the Indian Ocean Region. Deputy Foreign Minister Vikram Misri highlighted that the visit underscores India's commitment to reinforcing ties with its maritime neighbors as part of India's 'Neighbourhood First' policy and Vision MAHASAGAR.

The cabinet in India has approved the FTA with the UK, which is set to be signed during Modi's visit. This contract aims to facilitate economic cooperation, spur growth, and create job opportunities in both countries. The overarching objective of these visits is to inject new momentum into India-UK relations and bolster strategic partnerships in the region.

The talks during the UK visit will also cover regional and global developments of mutual concern, reinforcing India's international outreach and reassessing its strategic interests in the Indian Ocean and other regions.

Overall, PM Modi's engagements in both countries reflect a strong commitment to enhancing bilateral cooperation across various sectors, including trade, investment, technology, and security while reaffirming India's role as a pivotal partner in the region.
