Bhubaneswar, 23 July (H.S.): In a significant move aimed at bolstering student safety and security, the Odisha government has announced plans to install CCTV cameras in all schools across the state. The initiative aligns with the safety protocols already implemented in Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) affiliated institutions.
State School and Mass Education Minister Nityananda Gond confirmed the development, stating that the department is actively working on the implementation strategy. This initiative is being prioritized to ensure a secure learning environment for students, Gond said. Discussions are ongoing, and a final decision will be made following inter-departmental consultations and cabinet approval.
In addition to surveillance measures, the government has directed the formation of Internal Complaints Committees (ICC) in all schools. These committees will address grievances related to sexual harassment and gender-based discrimination, in compliance with the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) Act.
“The safety and empowerment of women and children within the education system are among the government’s top priorities,” Gond emphasized. “We have also established dedicated helpline numbers to facilitate the prompt reporting and resolution of complaints, which will be handled with the utmost seriousness.”
The CBSE has already mandated the installation of high-resolution CCTV cameras with audio-visual recording in all affiliated schools under its “School Safety” guidelines, as stipulated in the Affiliation Bye-Laws of 2018 and subsequent amendments.
