Delhi, 7 June (H.S.): Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney faces criticism for inviting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the G7 summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, from June 15 to 17. The backlash stems from ongoing investigations into the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, where Indian government involvement is suspected, particularly from Sikh advocacy groups. Carney refrained from commenting on Modi's potential role, citing that a legal process is underway in Canada. Four Indian nationals in Canada have been charged related to Nijjar's death.
Although India is not a G7 member, Carney justified the invitation by highlighting India's global significance as the fifth largest economy and a key player in supply chains. The summit will focus on critical minerals, artificial intelligence, and energy collaboration. PM Modi accepted the invitation, expressing hope for renewed cooperation guided by mutual respect.
Glad to receive a call from Prime Minister @MarkJCarney of Canada. Congratulated him on his recent election victory and thanked him for the invitation to the G7 Summit in Kananaskis later this month. As vibrant democracies bound by deep people-to-people ties, India and Canada will work together with renewed vigour, guided by mutual respect and shared interests. Look forward to our meeting at the Summit, PM Modi said.
Historical tensions between India and Canada, especially concerning Khalistani separatist activities, complicate this relationship. The G7 summit will also include leaders from other major industrialized nations and address global issues like the Russia-Ukraine conflict and tensions in the West Asia region.
