Kolkata, 3 June (H.S.): In a shocking case of animal cruelty, police in Kolkata's Survey Park area have arrested a couple accused of keeping multiple pets confined under inhumane conditions inside their upscale apartment. The incident came to light after residents of the building reported a persistent foul smell, disturbing animal cries, and suspicious activity emanating from the flat.

Following the complaint, officers from Survey Park Police Station conducted a raid on the premises. What they discovered was deeply disturbing—twenty-one animals, including dogs and cats of various breeds, were found living in squalor. The pets were confined in cramped, filthy conditions, suffering from severe malnutrition and dehydration. Several animals bore visible injuries, indicating prolonged neglect and possible abuse.

Initial investigations reveal that the couple had been housing these animals for an extended period without providing adequate food, medical care, or hygiene. Some of the animals were reportedly suffering from serious illnesses but had not been taken to a veterinarian.

All rescued animals were immediately shifted to a nearby veterinary facility, where they are undergoing medical treatment and assessment. A case has been registered against the couple under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. Police have confirmed that further investigation is underway.

Animal welfare organizations have joined hands with the authorities to ensure proper rehabilitation and care for the rescued pets. Investigators are also probing whether the couple was involved in illegal pet breeding or trafficking operations from the apartment.

Authorities have urged citizens to report any suspected case of animal cruelty, reaffirming their commitment to ensuring the safety and welfare of all animals.
