Delhi, 25 June (H.S.):The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India, has taken notice of a media report regarding a Scheduled Tribe woman's family facing social boycott after her marriage to a Scheduled Caste man in Rayagada, Odisha. Villagers demanded a purification ritual for the woman's family to be accepted back, threatening indefinite boycott if they refused.
The NHRC noted that if the report is accurate, it indicates serious human rights violations. Consequently, it has issued a notice to the Chief Secretary of Odisha, requesting a detailed report within two weeks.
The report from June 21, 2025, indicates the family complied with the villagers' demands, resulting in the tonsuring of 40 family members.
