Kolkata, 19 June (H.S.) -
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP and former judge Abhijit Gangopadhyay is being airlifted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, on Thursday evening following a rapid deterioration in his health. Hospital sources confirmed that he was discharged from Kolkata’s Woodlands Hospital in a critical state and is scheduled to reach AIIMS by 5:35 PM via air ambulance.
Gangopadhyay, who has been suffering from necrotizing pancreatitis and gastrointestinal sepsis, is reported to be in a life-threatening condition. Doctors stated that his condition has shown no signs of improvement. According to specialists, around 80 percent of his pancreas has been damaged—a complication that carries high risks, including internal bleeding, particularly after the second week of illness.
Prior to the transfer, a green corridor was established from Woodlands Hospital to the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport to ensure swift and uninterrupted transportation. Medical experts noted that necrotizing pancreatitis is a rare and severe condition in which pancreatic tissue begins to die rapidly, often leading to multiple complications.
Given the gravity of his condition, the decision to shift Gangopadhyay to AIIMS was taken jointly by his family and BJP leadership to ensure advanced medical care. A specialized treatment plan is being prepared for him at AIIMS’s Department of Gastroenterology.
