New Delhi, June 18 (H.S.): The World Health Organization has declared India free from trachoma, an infectious eye disease caused by Chlamydia trachomatis. Union Health Minister JP Nadda highlighted this achievement while outlining the central government's accomplishments over the past 11 years. The elimination of trachoma marks a significant milestone in public health, reflecting India's enhanced sanitation, accessibility, and eye care services. This disease had been a leading cause of blindness globally and a major public health concern. Successful eradication efforts have led to a moment of pride for India's health care system, community health workers, and citizens. Trachoma, known for its contagious nature, can spread through contact with infected individuals or items like handkerchiefs and towels.
