Kolkata, 12 June (H.S.) - A day after violent clashes broke out between two communities in South 24 Parganas' Maheshtala area, tension continued to simmer on Thursday morning, especially in Rabindranagar. The administration has deployed a large contingent of police to maintain law and order, while authorities are closely monitoring the situation.

Since early Thursday, police have conducted flag marches across sensitive areas. Additional personnel have been stationed at the local police station and surrounding zones. Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Indian Penal Code have been imposed across the region to prevent any untoward incidents. Police teams are also using loudspeakers to urge residents to remain calm and avoid circulating or believing in rumours.

So far, 28 individuals have been arrested in connection with the violence. Police have filed three FIRs, including at Rabindranagar and Nadial police stations.

According to local residents, markets and shops reopened partially on Thursday morning, but normal life remains disrupted. Streets are largely deserted, and many people are hesitant to step out of their homes. While some locals have welcomed the swift police response, others say the sense of fear still lingers.

On Wednesday evening, the area witnessed intense clashes between two groups. Protesters blocked roads near Rabindranagar police station by burning tyres and pelting stones at security personnel. A police vehicle parked near the station was also vandalized. Several police personnel were injured in the incident.

Police sources said the surveillance and patrolling will continue until the situation is fully under control. The administration is determined to prevent any further escalation and restore peace in the area.
