Kolkata, 12 June (H.S.) -

West Bengal Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari demanded the immediate deployment of central paramilitary forces in Rabindranagar, an area in Maheshtala under South 24 Parganas district, following large-scale violence.

Adhikari alleged that the Trinamool Congress-led state government had failed to protect Hindus in the region, where incidents of arson, looting, and vandalism took place for several hours. Several police officers were injured and multiple police vehicles were torched. The situation demands immediate intervention by central forces to restore peace and protect innocent people, Adhikari told reporters.

He further claimed that Director General of Police Rajiv Kumar refused to meet him, and accused the top cop of being indifferent despite the assault on police personnel. “During the Murshidabad violence, the Calcutta High Court had ordered central force deployment. I will move the High Court again tomorrow, seeking urgent intervention to protect the people of Rabindranagar,” Adhikari added.

BJP Assembly Chief Whip Shankar Ghosh said, “We received calls from sadhus requesting protection. They are in touch with distressed residents from the affected area.”

Reacting to the BJP’s allegations, the ruling TMC accused the saffron party of attempting to communalise a local dispute. The BJP is irresponsibly trying to give a communal twist to a local issue. Nothing should be done that could disrupt communal harmony, said Kunal Ghosh, TMC's state general secretary.

He added that the police are actively working on the ground to bring the situation under control and restore normalcy.
