Chaos at Howrah Nursing Home After Woman’s Death Allegedly Due to Medical Negligence

Kolkata, 12 June (H.S.) -Tensions erupted at a nursing home in Bankra, Howrah, on Wednesday night following the death of a 32-year-old woman, Tina Begum, which her family attributes to alleged medical negligence. Enraged relatives and locals reportedly vandalized the facility in protest, accusing the staff of mishandling her treatment.

Tina Begum, a resident of Munshidanga Sheikh Para in Bankra and originally from Dankuni in Hooghly, was admitted to the nursing home around 10 PM with severe abdominal pain. According to her family, her condition deteriorated rapidly after a doctor administered an injection intended to relieve the pain. She was pronounced dead around midnight.

Soon after the news of her death spread, a large crowd gathered outside the nursing home. Several individuals reportedly stormed the premises, damaging furniture, medical equipment, and CCTV cameras in a display of public outrage.

Local police from the Bankra outpost and RAF personnel rushed to the scene and brought the situation under control. No injuries have been reported so far, but police confirmed that a formal investigation is underway.

Residents claim this is not the first such incident involving the same nursing home. They allege that previous deaths due to medical negligence have occurred, raising concerns about the quality of care provided at the facility. According to witnesses, many of the medical staff fled the scene during the chaos.

In a related incident earlier this month, a doctor in Kasba, Kolkata, was physically assaulted in his chamber by a group of local men allegedly over a property dispute. Dr. Shankar Bhagwan Tiwari filed a police complaint against four individuals, including one identified as Chiku Pandey. He claimed the accused entered his chamber in an intoxicated state on the evening of June 1 and assaulted him following a heated argument. The situation escalated later when the accused returned with reinforcements and attacked the doctor and his son, who had tried to intervene. Dr. Tiwari reportedly suffered a dislocated shoulder and stated that his family now lives in constant fear.
