Poor Road Conditions Raised in West Bengal Assembly; Speaker Directs Installation of Complaint Drop Box

Kolkata, 11 June (H.S.): The issue of deteriorating road conditions across West Bengal dominated discussions during the monsoon session of the state legislative assembly on Wednesday. Several MLAs expressed serious concern over the state of roads in their constituencies and raised questions about the functioning of the Public Works Department (PWD).

The debate intensified when one MLA attempted to speak on the matter, prompting many others to raise their hands in agreement, eager to highlight similar issues in their own regions. Observing the scale of concern, Speaker Biman Banerjee remarked, “So many members want to speak on the condition of roads—it clearly indicates the situation is indeed grim, especially during the monsoon.”

Taking note of the widespread grievances, the Speaker directed the PWD Minister to install a drop box inside the Assembly premises. This would allow MLAs to submit written complaints regarding road infrastructure in their constituencies.

PWD Minister Pulak Roy assured the House that a drop box would be set up as instructed, and all complaints submitted would be addressed promptly.

It is worth noting that while the monsoon has not yet fully arrived in South Bengal, intermittent rainfall over the past few days has already worsened road conditions in many areas. Even minor showers have led to waterlogging in several places, adding to the woes of daily commuters and residents alike.
