Kolkata, 11 June (H.S.)
West Bengal Assembly Speaker, Biman Banerjee, on Wednesday accepted a privilege motion moved by Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLAs against Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari for allegedly making defamatory and untrue remarks against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee outside the assembly. The motion, signed by senior TMC ministers like Chandrima Bhattacharya and others, claimed Adhikari falsely stated that the CM praised Pakistan in her assembly speech. The matter has been referred to the privilege committee, which will submit its report by the next session, likely in September 2025. BJP MLAs argued that since the remarks were made outside the House, they do not constitute a breach of privilege. Following the Speaker’s decision, opposition members staged a walkout. The controversy stems from chaotic scenes in the assembly on Monday, when the CM praised the armed forces for strikes on terror hubs but criticized the Union government’s handling of the Pahalgam incident and its failure to reclaim Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) during a military conflict.
