Darang (Assam), 11 June (HS): There is panic after the confirmation of African swine fever in Kumarpara village of Mangaldoi area of Assam. The Animal Husbandry Department has so far killed and buried about 130 pigs considering them infected.

This disease spread in the farms of five pig farmers of the village - Deepak Shaharia, Jagat Deka, Durlabh Deka, Bhaven Deka and Hridayananda Deka. Many of these farmers were dreaming of becoming self-reliant through pig farming, but now this disease has become an economic crisis for them. 40 of the pigs killed were pregnant.

All the pig farmers have demanded the government to provide appropriate compensation and ensure vaccination to prevent such diseases in future.
