Mathura,
31 May (HS): A revenue inspector (kanungo) based in Sadar tehsil here was
detained by the anti-corruption squad on for allegedly receiving a bribe of Rs
50,000, police said on Saturday. Additional Superintendent of Police (Rural)
Suresh Chandra Rawat stated that the complainant, Meena, a resident of Asgarpur
village, had sought Kanungo Narendra Singh to have her land registered in her
name following her husband’s death. Singh allegedly demanded a Rs 2 lakh bribe
for the work, he claimed.
Meena
arranged for Rs 50,000 by mortgaging her jewellery and borrowing money, but the
inspector refused to proceed with the registration without full payment. She
then sought the anti-corruption organisation of Uttar Pradesh Police in Agra
with the aid of her relative, Murari. Following an inquiry, the kanungo's
corrupt conduct was proven. Murari and
his friend Kaunteya approached Singh at his workplace as part of a premeditated
operation, carrying Rs 50,000 in currency marked with chemicals, according to
the ASP. Singh accepted the money and tried to pocket it, but the
anti-corruption squad caught him red-handed and forced him to wash his hands,
which turned red from the chemical, he claimed.
He
was detained and transported to Raya police station, where a charge was filed
against him under the Prevention of Corruption Act. He was then sent to Agra, Rawat stated.
