Delhi, 29 May (H.S.): The Delhi Police informed a Delhi court that the tweets concerning journalist Rana Ayyub, which led to a case being registered against her, are no longer available on social media. Following court orders, police filed a first information report (FIR) and began investigating Ayyub for her tweets regarding Hindu deities and Hindutva ideologue Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, which reportedly offended Hindu sentiments. In their action taken report (ATR) submitted to Chief Judicial Magistrate Himanshu Raman Singh, the police mentioned uploading four Section 91 CrPC notices on Twitter (X) seeking details about the tweets and Ayyub’s account, with responses still pending from the platform.
The police stated, “On checking the X Platform, the alleged tweets are not available…upon receiving the reply from X, further investigation will be conducted.” The Court requested a fresh status report on May 28 and adjourned the case to July 30. The Court had previously ordered the police to investigate Ayyub on January 25, 2025, converting a complaint filed by lawyer Amita Sachdeva into an FIR, leading to charges under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) including hate speech and hurting religious sentiments.
