Delhi, 28 May (H.S.): The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India has taken notice of a report regarding a man's death in police custody on May 21, 2025, in Deoghar, Jharkhand. The individual was reportedly taken to Palajori police station for interrogation related to a cyber-crime, where his family claims he was subjected to physical torture leading to his death.

The NHRC deemed the allegations serious and has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police, Jharkhand, requesting a comprehensive report within six weeks. This report should include the inquest and post-mortem findings and a magisterial inquiry. Additionally, the NHRC criticized the district police for failing to inform the relevant authorities about the custodial death within the mandated 24-hour timeframe, seeking an explanation for this oversight. The victim's health reportedly declined during interrogation, resulting in his subsequent death at Deoghar Sadar Hospital.
