New Delhi, May 27 (HS): Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar reiterated on Tuesday the supremacy of Parliament. He stated that the Indian Parliament is not just a legislative body, but a reflection of the aspirations of 1.4 billion people. It is the only legitimate platform that authentically represents the sentiments of the public.
He said, “The executive has priority regarding the way governance is managed. The judiciary has priority concerning the justice system, but Parliament has priority for both reasons. First, it has the ultimate authority to make laws. Second, it holds the executive accountable. Because governance is defined by some fundamental elements: transparency, accountability, and the optimal performance of institutions to expedite our development path.”
Vice President and Chairman of the Rajya Sabha Jagdeep Dhankhar delivered an inspiring address to the youth based on the values of the Constitution, democracy, and nation-building on the occasion of the inauguration of the seventh batch of the Rajya Sabha internship program.
Dhankhar remarked that every citizen and institution should exercise their rights while remaining within the boundaries of the Constitution. The Constitution has granted us fundamental rights, but it has also made the observance of duties mandatory. India is one of the few countries where citizens can knock on the doors of the Supreme Court to protect their fundamental rights.
On crucial issues like national security and economic development, the Vice President urged all political classes to rise above party politics and unite for the national interest. He stated that economic nationalism is the responsibility of every citizen and that we should adopt indigenous practices and support local products.
Referring to “Operation Sindoor,” he noted that it has changed our way of thinking towards national security, the economy, and public welfare. Today, we are more nationalistic than before. He also added that peace is only sustainable when we have strength — which includes technological capability, conventional military power, and public support.
Dhankhar clarified that India was not born in 1947. It is an ancient nation with glorious traditions that are thousands of years old.
On this occasion, he nominated renowned ophthalmologist and scholar Dr. M. L. Raja for the Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan Chair for the year 2025-26. Dr. Raja has made notable contributions in medicine, as well as in history, archaeology, and epigraphy. His contributions to Tamil literature have already been honored by the Governor of Tamil Nadu.
Highlighting the importance of the Rajya Sabha internship program, the Vice President stated that it is a unique opportunity for youth to familiarize themselves with the functioning of Parliament, its values, and the democratic spirit, which will instill a sense of responsibility and inspire patriotism in them.
