New Delhi, May 27 (H.S.): The two female officers of the Indian Navy, Commander Dilna K and Commander Roopa A, completed their global circumnavigation aboard INS Tarini and will return to Goa on May 29. This historic expedition, called Nari Sagar Parikrama II, launched from Goa's Ocean Sailing Node on October 2 of the previous year. The flag hoisting ceremony at Mormugao port, chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, marks the expedition's conclusion. Over eight months, the officers traveled 25,400 nautical miles (approximately 50,000 km) across four continents, three oceans, and three great capes, enduring challenging weather and sea conditions.
The crew made stops at Fremantle (Australia), Lyttelton (New Zealand), Port Stanley (Falkland Islands), and Cape Town (South Africa), engaging in diplomatic outreach programs with various communities, including parliaments and educational institutions. Their journey was recognized as a symbol of women's empowerment and national pride, earning praise from local and international organizations.
Facing winds up to 50 knots (93 km/h), the team navigated severe weather, with the toughest phase being the journey from Lyttelton to Port Stanley, which included encountering cyclones and rounding Cape Horn. Interactions with the Defense Minister and the Chief of Naval Staff highlighted the significance of their accomplishment.
