IndiGo Begins Restoring Operations After 1,000 Flight Cancellations; Disruptions Continue at Several Airports

Delhi, 6 December (H.S.): A day after IndiGo cancelled more than 1,000 flights, Delhi Airport on Saturday announced that the airline’s operations are “steadily resuming” and gradually returning to normal. The airport authority has advised passengers to check their flight status before heading out.

“We are glad to update that IndiGo flight operations are now steadily resuming and getting back to normalcy following the brief disruption. Please check the status of your booking and flight before leaving from home,” Delhi Airport posted on X.

IndiGo had cancelled all domestic departures from Delhi Airport until Friday midnight, marking December 5 as the most severely impacted day amid a nationwide disruption.

IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers, in a video statement, acknowledged the scale of the crisis and extended apologies to passengers.

“December 5 was the most severely impacted day, with cancellations well over 1,000. It will take some time to return to a full normal situation, which we anticipate between 10 to 15 December,” Elbers said.

Cancellations Continue Across India

Even as Delhi operations begin to stabilise, disruptions persisted at several airports on Saturday:

-

Thiruvananthapuram Airport (Kerala): 3 domestic arrivals and 3 domestic departures cancelled.

-

Ahmedabad Airport (Gujarat): Between midnight and 6 am on December 6, 7 arrivals and 12 departures were cancelled, officials confirmed.

Government Response

Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu attributed the widespread delays and congestion to IndiGo’s crew mismanagement and its handling of the new Flight Duty Time Limitation (FDTL) rules introduced by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

The ministry is closely monitoring the situation as the airline works to restore full operations in the coming days.
