Tension escalated in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district on Monday after a protest over a road blockade in Kheroni turned violent, leaving three protesters injured in police firing and triggering arson at the old residence of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) Chief Executive Member Tuliram Ronghang.
According to sources, hundreds of people had gathered in Kheroni and blocked the road to press their demands, leading to severe traffic disruption. The situation deteriorated when police intervened to disperse the crowd, during which police reportedly opened fire, injuring three protesters. The injured were later shifted to a hospital for treatment.
Following the police firing, the situation became more volatile, with angry protesters allegedly setting fire to the old residence of Tuliram Ronghang. Fire and emergency services were rushed to the spot to control the blaze, while additional security forces were deployed in the area to prevent further violence.
Senior officials said the situation remains tense but under control and an investigation has been initiated into the incidents, including the police firing and the arson attack. Authorities have appealed to the public to maintain peace and cooperate with the administration.----------
