Cong holds protest against BJP move to repeal MGNREGA


Srinagar, 22 December (H.S.): The Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee today held strong protest at Srinagar and Jammu against the deliberate step by introducing a bill to repeal Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act popularly known as MGNREGA in which hundreds of party workers participated and condemned the BJP Govt for trying to erase Mahatma Gandhi’s name from the Act.

A minor scuffle took place between Congress activists and police, during a strong protest demonstration by Congress in Jammu.

Led by National spokesperson Surinder Singh Rajput and working president Raman Bhalla and several former ministers, legislators and senior leaders, frontal heads, the protest was organized by PCC in collaboration with DCC Jammu Urban and Jammu Rural.

Launching a scathing attack on the Modi Government AICC spokesperson said that Modi Government has insulted Mahatma Gandhi as the ideology and philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi is not acceptable to BJP and RSS. He said that replacing of the name can’t kill the philosophy of Gandhi Ji in this country. He said new scheme will spoil the economy of poor and labour class in villages and fail the jobs and gram swaraj of Mahatma Gandhi.

Raman Bhalla said that BJP is opposed to the philosophy of Gandhi Ji, that is why they repealed the most successful and pro-poor MGNREGA scheme. The new scheme will destroy the economy of rural poor and labour as it is centralised and burden on the states, which are funds starved.

The protesters raised slogans against Central Government.

Senior leaders Mula Ram, Ravinder Sharma, Ved Mahajan, GM Saroori, Majid Wani, Yogesjh Sawhney, Th Balbir Singh, Indu Pawar, Th Hari Singh, Manmohan Singh, Ashok Dogra, Rajnish Sharma, Kanta Bhan, T S Tony, Shammema Raina, Hussain Ali Wafa , Prof Sandip Singh, Prof HR Sharma, Vinod Sharma, Shashi Sharma, Narinder Gupta, Satish Sharma, Neeraj Gupta and many others also joined the protest.

Similar protests were held in all the district headquarters of Jammu Province.

In Srinagar, JKPCC president Tariq Hameed Karra led hundreds of Party workers from Congress office to protest against BJP- RSS move to repeal MGNREGA. The event witnessed minor scuffle between the Police and Congress workers as the heavy contingent of Police and Para military forces deployed at MA Road closed the entry gate of Congress headquarters and pushed back the protesting Congress leaders and workers.

Amid heavy rain, hundreds of Congress leaders and workers assembled at Srinagar Party office in the morning and started peacefully marching towards the MA Road to lodge their protest against the BJP Govt to repeal MGNREGA, besides the assault on democracy & democratic institutions in the country, but the police and paramilitary forces did not allow them to move out.
