New Delhi/Dibrugarh , 21 December (H.S.): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday accused previous Congress governments of crippling India's fertiliser sector by shutting down plants across the country, including in Assam, forcing farmers into long queues for urea and even facing lathi charges to control shortages. He asserted that the current government is steadfastly rectifying these failures by establishing new fertiliser units nationwide.

PM Modi performed the ground-breaking ceremony for the ₹10,600 crore ammonia-urea brownfield project by Assam Valley Fertiliser and Chemicals Company at Namrup in Dibrugarh district. This ambitious initiative, with an investment exceeding ₹10,600 crore, will meet fertiliser demands in Assam and neighbouring states, reduce import dependency, generate substantial employment, and accelerate regional economic growth.

Addressing a public rally, Modi alleged that Congress continues its anti-national mindset by seeking to settle Bangladeshi illegal infiltrators in Assam's forests and lands solely to bolster its vote bank, showing scant regard for the state's identity, culture, and honour. He charged that Congress itself facilitated and protected such infiltration, explaining its opposition to voter list purification via the Special Intensive Revision (SIR).

PM Modi vowed that BJP stands like steel with the people to shield Assam from this poison of appeasement and vote-bank politics. The Prime Minister highlighted Congress's open opposition when his government conferred Bharat Ratna on Bhupen Hazarika, terming the party president's remark—Modi is giving Bharat Ratna to dancers and singers—an insult not just to Bhupen Da but to entire Assam and its cultural heritage.

He described the day as historic for Assam and the Northeast, with Namrup and Dibrugarh's long-cherished dream materialising to usher in a new chapter of industrial progress laying foundations for comprehensive future development.

Under the BJP's Double Engine government synergy of industry and connectivity, Modi said Assam's growth is gaining momentum, fostering economic activity and instilling confidence in youth to pursue ambitious dreams. The new ammonia-urea unit will create thousands of direct and indirect jobs, with permanent employment for many upon commissioning and opportunities in ancillary sectors prioritising local youth.

PM Modi noted his earlier inauguration of Guwahati's new airport terminal that day, underscoring Assam's accelerated development trajectory. He added that Jan Dhan accounts have been opened for 7.5 lakh tea plantation workers, enabling direct government aid transfer, enhancing transparency, and improving basic facilities in plantation areas.

Emphasising the Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas vision's transformative impact, PM Modi stated that over 25 crore people have escaped poverty in the last 11 years, birthing a new neo-middle class strengthening India's growth story. He stressed farmers' pivotal role in Viksit Bharat, with government policies prioritising their welfare through initiatives like the ₹35,000 crore PM Dhan-Dhanya Krishi Yojana and Pulses Aatmanirbharta Mission.Under PM Kisan Samman Nidhi, nearly ₹4 lakh crore has reached farmers' accounts directly from seed to market.
